This pack is designed to help you to sort and label your library books. The guidance includes a full list of categories and explains which subjects feature in each category. This pack is suitable for adults in primary school to use including those who do not have formal librarian training.
Narnia Libraries has used the principles of the Dewey decimal system and uniquely combined them with the requirements of a primary school. Each label has a colour, a number and an image.
Colour
Labels are organised into 11 different colours which represent broad subject areas and match with the Dewey decimal system multiple of 100 categories. For example, all books at the 600s technology have the colour red
Number
Each multiple of 100 is then divided into multiples of 10 to give a 3-digit number. In a primary school subjects are broad, and a school library is likely to only have a few books on each subject, so the fine labelling of the complete Dewey decimal system is not needed in the same way as it is in an academic or adult library setting. For example, in Dewey 610 is general medicine and hospitals, 612 is the human body, 613 is health, 615 is medication, 616 is diseases, 617 is dentistry and within these categories there are more divisions with a decimal point. This is more detail than you need in a primary school and many books will be about all of these sub subjects combined. So, these labels have just 610 for all medicine and human body.
Image
The image is there to help those children not confident with 3-digit numbers alone. The images have been carefully selected to be clear and to link to the subjects. For example, 610 the human body category has a picture of a skeleton on it.
Each pack has guidance and enough labels to allow the average school library to label their primary library non-fiction books. Also included are shelf labels that will be sent to you as an electronic resource for you to print and use in your library. Each label measures 1cm x 2.4cm and the pack has 15 sheets. Each sheet has 189 labels so that is a total of 2,835 labels. This pack provides a way for you to organise your books and stay in budget!
You can use this system for your EYFS themed books if you wish but see the separate system for them,
