This pack has been developed to assist in sorting and labelling library books efficiently. The accompanying guidance provides a comprehensive list of categories, detailing the subjects included within each classification. It is specifically designed for use by adults working in primary schools, including those without formal librarian training.

Narnia Libraries has integrated the principles of the decimal classification system with the unique needs of a primary school setting. Each label features a designated colour, number, and image for clarity and ease of use.

Colour

Labels are categorised into 11 distinct colours, each representing a broad subject area. For instance, all books classified under the 600s—technology—are marked with red labels.

Number

Each main category (a multiple of 100) is further divided into multiples of 10, resulting in a three-digit numbering system. Given that primary schools typically have a limited selection of titles per subject, this streamlined system is more appropriate than the detailed decimal systems found in academic or adult libraries. For example, all materials related to medicine and the human body are labelled as 610.

Image

Images are included to support children who may not be confident recognising three-digit numbers. Each image is thoughtfully chosen to clearly represent its subject; for example, category 610 (the human body) includes a skeleton illustration.

Each pack contains guidance and a sufficient quantity of labels to categorize an average primary school library’s non-fiction collection. Labels measure 1cm x 2.4cm. The set comprises 10 sheets (one sheet for each of nine types, plus an additional sheet for the 900s). Each sheet contains 189 labels, totalling 1,890 labels. This pack offers a practical solution for organising your library resources while adhering to budget constraints.

Additionally, this system can be utilised for EYFS themed books, or you may opt to use our dedicated EY themed labels if preferred.
