This school in the East Midlands reached out to Narnia Libraries for assistance. The newly appointed head had identified the library and KS2 reading books as areas requiring improvement. The library lacked functional systems, making it difficult for anyone to locate specific books. Additionally, the school recognised the need for levelled reading books for KS2 pupils and aimed to address this.
A plan was devised to categorise books into one of 3 collections:-
book bands ranging from turquoise to black,
a fiction reading for pleasure section divided into Y1/2, Y3/4, and Y5/6 for pupil guidance
a themed collection for subject-specific books.
The library contained a significant amount of outdated stock, most of which was over 20 years old and in poor condition. Some newer acquisitions had become lost among the old stock, rendering them unused.
The project took five days and included organising books from a cupboard and those in KS2 classrooms. The library has now become the school's central resource for books. The school plans to make some adjustments to the room's furniture to use the space more effectively. Initially, there was a plan to purchase a new reading scheme for KS2, but this work has changed that need, allowing a book order to focus on specific gaps identified in the book audit.
